TRANSPORTATION / HIGHWAY TRAVEL

Major Highways
Interstate 40, the major east-west transportation route across the nation, intersects in Memphis with Interstate 55, the major north-south route for the central United States. Interstate 40 and Interstate 55 span the Mississippi River at Memphis, while Interstate 240 encircles the city for commuting ease and distribution routes that by-pass the bustling inner city. Seven federal highways converge in Memphis: US Highways 51, 61, 64, 70, 72, 78, and 79. The new Interstate 69—planned to traverse the nation as it links Toronto, Canada, with Monterrey, Mexico—will add another valuable highway resource to one of the most efficient networks enjoyed by any metropolitan area.
