The commitment to lifelong education is evident in Alamance County, anchored by the Alamance-Burlington School System. Alamance Community College serves students of all ages with a full range of two-year degree and certification programs as well as continuing education, college-track programs, and specialized training. The college maintains its main campus in Graham and a Burlington Center in the Burlington Outlet Village. The dynamic private institution of Elon University provides a comprehensive university setting known for excellence in arts and sciences as well as outstanding professional programs. Just northwest of Raleigh/Durham, the college is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and enjoys a beautiful and historic 575-acre campus. The college is a recognized leader in engaged learning, garnering top ratings in the National Survey of Student Engagement and accolades for student engagement from Newsweek-Kaplan. The college is a national leader in the percentage of undergraduates who study abroad and for hours of community service. Princeton Review applauded the beauty of the Elon campus, where the wooded grounds have been designated a botanical garden. The campus enriches the entire area intellectually and also culturally.

State-of-the-art healthcare services and facilities are anchored by Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, a multi-faceted health system with a number of outreach and specialty centers. The medical center is based on a philosophy that combines advanced technology with a caring attitude of respect and compassion for every patient. Alamance Regional has received countless awards and recognition on every level, including two grants for services related to breast cancer screening and diagnosis from the North Carolina Triad Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Assisted by the Norville Breast Care Center and Women’s Care Center, the Cancer Center of Alamance Regional Medical Center has been awarded approval with commendation by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. The signs of growth are everywhere, including Edgewood Place, Alamance Regional’s new skilled nursing building or the new Village at Brookwood retirement community. Other recent additions include a new pediatric rehabilitation center on South Church Street near Elon, expansion at Mebane Medical Park, and the new West End Medical Park. This patient-centered environment includes the most advanced diagnostics, all private rooms in the four-story patient tower, and sunlit medical malls for outpatient services. The LifeStyle Center at Alamance Regional promotes health and wellness, offering a broad range of services and programs that guide and encourage health life choices.

Alamance County welcomes newcomers to a charming hometown atmosphere that represents an intriguing blend yesterday and today, of historic landmarks and modern business. This harmony of contrasts seems to give the area a distinctive appeal and special character of its own. Residents and visitors alike have the advantage of the Interstate 85/40 corridor for quick and easy access to recreational areas as well as to major colleges and universities, medical centers, and shopping areas. Closer to home, they enjoy premier watersports supported by four sparkling lakes and the Haw River, lush parks and scenic hiking trails, and organized programs from municipal recreation departments and the YMCA. Nestled in the heartland of North Carolina between the mountains and the coast, Burlington offers rich history, exciting cultural attractions, great shopping and recreation activities that include some of the state’s best golf courses. Burlington enjoys a unique position in North Carolina, supporting thriving industries, a growing retail sector, and residential development. Few hometowns have more visual appeal and historic charm than Elon, home to the elegant campus of Elon University. Like a quaint college-town version of Mayberry, Elon harmonizes the best of yesterday with a progressive community outlook, offering postcard images at every turn. The university plays strongly into the vibrancy and richness of the atmosphere and adds a world of cultural enrichment as well as convenient performance spaces and first-rate programs. In fact, the town of Elon has a population significantly impacted by students living on and off campus, for a youthful and dynamic social energy. The town is home to K-9 Corner, Alamance County’s first dog park. The picturesque centerpiece of Elon is Beth Schmidt Park, a well-groomed green space with wonderful amenities like an amazing playset for the kids. The town of Gibsonville is actually shared between Alamance County and adjacent Guilford County. In fact, Gibsonville is home to one of Guilford County’s finest recreational spaces, Northeast Park. This 374-acre expanse of natural beauty supports both passive and active recreation and serves as a major leisure activity destination. The town is located about 15 miles from Greensboro and about 37 miles from Durham but also just a short drive from High Point, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill. Filled with historic charm, Gibsonville features bed and breakfasts in restored mansions or elegant homes as well as wonderful shops and inviting restaurants and cafes. The welcome signs that herald Graham as “A City Designed for Living” give newcomers a hint of the appeal of this friendly hometown. The town of Green Level offers a friendly and intimate small-town atmosphere for residential development. At the same time, this once-sleepy community is poised for future economic growth based on its ideal location along State Highway 49 with Interstate 85/40 just five miles away. Two of North Carolina’s largest cities, Greensboro and Durham, are just a 30-minute drive from home, opening a world of entertainment, educational, and cultural amenities. Green Level is proud of its past, and currently houses the Town Hall in a former elementary school building from the early 20th century. Many of the lovely older homes in this community are well-kept and well-manicured. Civic planners and residents are united in their desire to continually improve their community, including a citizen-run beautification committee. The group has already renovated the Town Hall and applied for and received a $250,000 grant in support of the new Town Park.

Newcomers can choose from a mix of older properties and newer construction, and “more home for the dollar” is the rule in this friendly rural town. Strong demand has great increased the availability housing in the Swepsonville area, from well-kept vintage properties to country manors, multi-acre sites, handsome condominiums, active senior communities, and vibrant new construction. Much of the growth has stretched from the eastern part of the community toward the mountains. Regional recreational sites are varied and encourage hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, boating, watersports, golfing, tennis, and sports leagues.
