The respect for education has long been a tradition in Guilford County, where the Guilford County Schools has more than 1,700 business and community partners. Quality public and private schools from preschool through 12th grade provide outstanding opportunities for high school students, including early and middle colleges and specialized study centers like the fine arts school that are nationally recognized. Vocational, technical, and career training is available within the Guilford Technical Community College system, where three local campuses offer associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Browns Summit is also known by some as Brown Summit, a discrepancy due to its unofficial status as an unincorporated community just northeast of Greensboro. Browns Summit is ideally located near the intersections of NC Highway 150 and US Highway 29 along the planned Interstate 785. Development in this fast-growing area is being fueled by its close proximity to Greensboro and Reidsville. Many beautiful new housing developments have already sprung up and more are in progress, particularly along the bustling NC Highway 50 corridor. The completion of the Greensboro Urban Loop will place Browns Summit just a few miles beyond access to that highway, further accelerating the development of this easily accessible area. The city of High Point was named after the “highest point” on the North Carolina Railroad between Goldsboro and Charlotte. Nestled in the northwestern corner of Guilford County, Oak Ridge is home to the Oak Ridge Military Academy, a private college-prep boarding school established in 1852. The official military school of North Carolina, it is also distinguished as one of the oldest military schools in the nation. Until the late 1990s, Oak Ridge was primarily rural farmland dotted with picturesque tobacco and strawberry fields. Since its incorporation in 1998, the community has undergone rapid growth and development. Many farms have been sold to developers, and now grow crops of lovely homes in upscale developments. Several shopping centers have sprung up around the military academy. Today, Oak Ridge is considered to be one of the wealthy suburbs of Greensboro and a desirable residential community. One rural pastime that remains is the raising and breeding of horses, crowned each Easter weekend by a popular horse show.
