Services
The powerful influence of the Los Alamos National Laboratory has positively affected the demographics of this sparsely populated area, where the population mix includes many scientists, engineers, lawyers, physicians, and professors. In fact, Alamos County leads the entire nation in the percentage of employees who hold top-level positions and the median income is one of the highest in the nation. The laboratory is the largest institution in northern New Mexico and operated by the University of California under a $2.2 billion annual budget.

These favorable demographics have driven high standards in education and healthcare. The academic strength of the public school system is evidenced in achievement test performance  but also in the number of advanced level courses that are offered in English, math, science, computers, history, and foreign language. This broad-ranging curriculum encompasses first-rate programs in the arts and physical activity. Both teacher salaries and per-student expenditures rank among the highest in the state. The University of New Mexico provides a branch campus in Los Alamos that excels in small classes and dedicated instructors. Providing the hands-on learning experiences associated with a private liberal arts college, UNM-LA offers a wide range of two-year degree and certification programs, continuing education, and college-track studies.

The region provides state-of-the-art healthcare services that are anchored by the Los Alamos Medical Center. Inpatient services include a multi-care unit for acute care, a family-oriented birthing center, surgical specialties, and care coordination professionals who reach out into every corner of the community. The hospital’s clinical services division meets both routine and specialized outpatient needs at the LAMC Family Care Center and the LAMC Special Care Center. Advanced imaging, on-site pharmacies, and rehabilitation therapies complete the list of comprehensive outpatient services.
