The district is one of the largest in Louisiana and consistently in the Top Ten for performance, boasting three award-winning high schools. Among the choices is the Northshore Technical Community College in nearby Hammond and Baton Rouge Community College, along with numerous other career and technical schools throughout the region. Hammond is also home to Southeastern Louisiana University, the third-largest public university in the state offering more than 60 degree programs. Baton Rouge is home to Louisiana State University, the flagship institution for the Louisiana State University System, with 14 schools and colleges—several of which are nationally recognized. Another highly respected public college in Baton Rouge is Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, covering 512 acres on Scott’s Bluff above the Mississippi River.

North Oaks Health System recently opened the Livingston Parish Medical Complex, a $32 million outpatient facility on a 30-acre site just off Interstate 12. Staffed with skilled professionals, the complex provides primary care and specialty services including advanced diagnostics, laboratory, and rehabilitation therapies. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, one of Louisiana’s “Top 100” hospitals, has also opened a campus in Walker that offers a full-service Emergency Room for urgent medical care, offering the same physician skill and equipment as the flagship campus. Livingston residents can access a wide range of outpatient services from advanced imaging to primary and specialized care. Should a hospital admission be required, transport is quick and easy to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in nearby Baton Rouge, an 800-bed regional hospital that also encompasses a 95-bed Children’s Hospital. The parish maintains a long-term acute-care facility in Denham Springs and convenient urgent-care clinics. Family Health of Louisiana has been serving Livingston Parish for more than 50 years, offering clinics in the Denham Springs-Watson area. The small, rural Town of Albany along the eastern border of the parish was originally settled by Hungarian immigrants and has managed to remain one of the largest Hungarian communities in America. This proud, close-knit community hosts the Hungarian Harvest Festival and one of Louisiana’s largest Christmas Parades, with the strong sense of local heritage adding to the event’s appeal. The expansion of Livingston Parish has not escaped this wonderful rural community, and population growth spurred an upgrade in status from village to town in 2012. Well-served by US Highway 90, residents are minutes from Hammond, home to Southeastern Louisiana University and The Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts. The largest and most western municipality in the parish, bustling Denham Springs is served by US Highway 90 and Interstate 12, with the scenic Amite River forming a portion of its boundary. The tiny village of French Settlement swells in population on certain days of the week as throngs of weekend boaters and anglers converge on the picturesque Amite River. The community also plays host to regional visitors during the popular Creole Festival each October, held on the grounds of the Creole House Museum near the Village Hall. This oddly shaped village has limits that extend only 1,000 feet on either side of Highway 16 from Colyell Bay to the Amite River, giving it a shape like a very thin slice of pie. Characterized as primarily rural, it has grown slowly but steadily since its incorporation in 1965. Residents enjoy the intimacy of a close-knit community where neighbors know each other by name and stop to chat. Ideally located just 25 miles east of Baton Route along US Highway 190, the Town of Livingston also provides easy access to Interstate 12. Serving as the parish seat, Livingston is home to the courthouse and government offices, the parish fairgrounds, a motor vehicle branch office, and just north of the town—one of the nation’s only laser interferometer gravitational wave observatories operated by the National Science Foundation. The most eastern town in the parish, Springfield is situated along the banks of Natalbany River near regional recreational attractions like Tickfaw River and Tickfaw State Park. The City of Walker is one of the fastest-growing in Louisiana and recently recognized as one of the top ten places in the state to raise a family. Business is booming in Walker, home to the Livingston Parish Industrial Park and Co-Mar Commercial Park just east of the town along US Highway 190.
