While Greater Detroit includes less than 10 percent of the state’s land area, it is home to nearly half of Michigan’s population. From its traditional roots as an industrial and automotive city, modern Detroit boasts a diverse and service-based economy where 62 percent of the labor force is employed in the service sector. Manufacturing and federal, state, and local governments represent other significant segments within the local economy. Greater Detroit also serves as a major center for progressive medical and high technology research and development, fueled by internationally acclaimed university medical centers. More than 700 foreign-owned companies maintain a presence in the Detroit region, representing nearly 25 countries and employing more than 75,000 people.
