Named for Indiana Supreme Court Judge John Johnson, Johnson County is one of the fastest growing counties in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. State-of-the-art healthcare is available in leading facilities like Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, a 161-bed hospital providing a wide range of specialty services. The hospital medical staff includes more than 75 physicians and a network of over 100 consulting specialists who also practice at other central Indiana hospitals. Residents of Johnson County can take advantage of local and regional recreational areas to engage in a wide range of sports and outdoor adventures. The 1,000-acre Johnson County Recreation Area operated by the county offers picnicking, primitive camping, and Hoosier Horse Park — site of the 1987 Pan American Games equestrian events. Throughout the county, more than 25 municipal parks encompass 200 acres of natural beauty and serve as a scenic backdrop for tennis courts, volleyball courts, baseball diamonds, playgrounds, picnic areas, swimming pools, and recreational centers. Within short driving distances are more than a dozen municipal golf courses and lakes for boating and fishing, including the 10,000-acre Monroe Reservoir. The small community of Edinburgh nevertheless boasts a strong industrial base and supports more than 2,000 manufacturing jobs. Enjoying a prime location adjacent to Bartholomew and Shelby Counties provides a joint economic development district that offers excellent opportunities for residents and the entire community. Newcomers will find quality public education in the Edinburgh Community Schools, quaint antique stores and outlet mall shopping, an excellent transportation network, the Timbergate Golf Course, and the Hoosier Horse Park. A family health center associated with Johnson Memorial Hospital is available to meet healthcare needs conveniently close to home. Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh currently serves as one of the Midwest’s premier military training areas. Open year round, it serves the training requirements of all branches of military forces as well as Federal and local law enforcement and other agencies. Just 20 miles south of Indianapolis, the City of Franklin was named after Benjamin Franklin and serves as the county seat. The community’s location has allowed it to maintain a small-town identity and integrity while it benefits from the growth and economic stability of the Indianapolis metropolitan region. Area youth receive a quality education in Franklin Community School Corporation. The presence of Franklin College enriches the city in many respects, providing higher education opportunities in the liberal arts that stress the importance of faculty-student relationships and innovative leadership programs. The adjacent communities of Whiteland and New Whiteland maintain a close relationship in spite of the formation of separate town governments in 1954. The re-routing of U.S. 31 distinguished New Whiteland as a community with the potential for strong economic growth. The youth of both towns receive a quality education in the Clark Pleasant Community School Corporation, and residents enjoy easy access to regional recreational attractions such as Fort Harrison State Park, New Albany-Floyd County Park, and White River State Park. New Whiteland provides several lush parks with facilities that include sports fields and courts, tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, walking trails, and a tot park. Whiteland Raceway Park represents a unique local attraction where racing karts are quipped with unrestricted Honda engines for speeds up to 45 mph. Many new residential communities with beautiful new homes are available in this growing area.
