The vast expanse of Luce County is largely preserved by Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources, the Nature Conservancy, and private enterprise. Sections of privately owned land are scattered throughout the county, with the majority of residents living in and around the village of Newberry. Just 30 miles beyond Newberry is the Lake Superior shoreline.

Services
Residents of Luce County are fortunate to have a first-rate healthcare center close to home: the Helen Newberry Joy Hospital & Health Center. The hospital, one of the most technologically advanced in the eastern Upper Peninsula, maintains 24-hour emergency care and is staffed by specially trained ER physicians. Other specialized services include a state-of-the-art laboratory and imaging including mobile MRI services as well as the availability of chemotherapy and IV infusions on an outpatient basis. Surgical specialists rotate services at the Specialty Clinic in such areas and techniques as orthopedic, urology, endoscopy, oncology, OB/Gyn, ophthalmology, podiatry, laparoscopic, and arthroscopic. Other specialists in areas like cardiology, neurology, ENT, nephrology, and audiology are available by appointment. Telehealth advancements make possible consultations with specialists at a distance. The hospital provides comprehensive rehabilitation services, a recognized Spine & Sport Clinic, a long-term care unit, and clinics in outlying areas. The wellness center underlines the commitment to health education, providing the most up-to-date training equipment and expert advice to the community.

Local schools provide a quality education from preschool through high school, staffed by dedicated instructors who have the advantage of smaller classes and the opportunity to provide more individualized attention. Lake Superior State University (LSSU) in nearby Sault Ste. Marie in Chippewa County is a popular choice for higher education. LSSU draws students to a private-college atmosphere in a smaller public university, distinguishing as being the only public university in Michigan with a primary focus on undergraduate education. Many programs feature “hands on” learning opportunities like internships, co-ops, practica, student and faculty research teams, and senior projects that apply mastery skills. The university’s location is ideal for studying biology, fisheries, chemistry, geology, and recreation management. Nearly twice the distance from Luce County than LSSU, Northwestern Michigan College is available in Traverse City.

Lifestyle
Beautiful Luce County is situated in the very heart of the eastern Upper Peninsula, a land of sparkling lakes, abundant wildlife, historical sites, and exceptional recreational opportunities. Nearly half of Luce County is classified as freshwater swampland, with much of the undeveloped land contained in the Lake Superior National Forest. Hiking, golfing, swimming, biking, fishing, hunting, boating, snowmobiling, skiing, horseback riding, and other outdoor adventures are common pastimes. Newcomers are drawn to the friendliness of small towns, the pleasures of a rural lifestyle, and the opportunity to contribute to and improve a growing community. Some of the natural treasures in Luce County include the spectacular Tahquamenon Falls, hundreds of thousands of acres of forest land, Muskallonge Lake State Park, nearly 660 miles of rivers and streams including Hemingway’s Big Two-Hearted River, and 30 miles of Lake Superior shoreline.

The leading community of Newberry is proud of its status as Michigan’s official “Moose Capital,” drawing visitors to accommodations from rustic to modern and a world of outdoor recreation. The Newberry Golf & Country Club is a focal point of social and recreational activity in this year-round playground, although winter sports are especially popular. The snow-rich environment is graced by more than 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and 20 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails. The four seasons bring a kaleidoscope of changing scenery and vibrant colors, as well as a relaxed lifestyle where residents take time for berry picking, mushrooming, fishing, and agate hunting along the Lake Superior shoreline. Other attractions include the Whitefish Point Shipwreck Museum, the Tahquamenon Logging Museum with its boardwalk nature trail, and the Luce County Historical Museum. Within a 60-mile radius of the county, residents can access outstanding regional destinations like Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the Seney National Wildlife Refuge, the entertainment centers of Bay Mills and Kewadin Casinos, the famous Soo Locks, and Mackinac Island. From its natural resources and friendly spirit to affordable real estate, Luce County is a wonderful place to call home.

The village of Newberry and surrounding Mcmillan Township are home to the majority of Luce County residents. The village is located at the southern end of the township and shares in some of the town administrative responsibilities. Newberry is surrounded by vast acres of state and national forests and is one of two gateway communities that lead to the spectacular Tahquamenon Falls area. Newberry is proud of its designation as Michigan’s Moose Capital. Newcomers will find a pleasant village atmosphere with commercial conveniences, opportunities for dining, and a brisk recreational tourism business. While some homes are seasonal or vacation rentals, nearly 70 percent of the Newberry housing is owner occupied. The average age of the housing in and near the village tends to be higher than that in many communities, so historic homes and well-kept older properties are ideal for those who appreciate affordable quality.
