The diverse list includes the Air Force Institute of Technology, Antioch College, Cedarville University, Central State University, the Greene Center for Clark State Community College, Wilberforce University, and Wright State University. Within a 30-mile radius, 20 colleges and universities include several major industrial and high-tech research foundations.
The network of healthcare services and facilities is anchored by Greene Memorial Hospital, providing compassionate, state-of-the-art care with five-star customer service to residents of Greene County and surrounding areas. Opened in 1951, GMH maintains satellite facilities in Beavercreek, Fairborn, Xenia, and Yellow Springs to bring superior care close to home. Recognized on local, state, and national levels for innovative programming and a commitment to excellence, GMH provides a full spectrum of services including advanced diagnostics, rehabilitative, and surgical specialties. The cancer center has received special commendation, while the John C. The historical village of Clifton grew up along the Little Miami River and still draws visitors to the world’s largest water-powered grist mill. Located just seven miles south of Springfield on Route 72, this small community is home to several historical buildings and wonderful antique shops. The famous Clifton Mill is the tallest structure in the village, which preserves a glimpse of early pioneer life in its remaining original buildings. Clifton is a neighboring village to the recreational community of Yellow Springs in an area that features the natural wonders of Clifton Gorge and John Bryan State Park, considered by many to be the most scenic State Park in Western Ohio. The park is a showcase for the remarkable limestone gorge carved by the Little Miami River, designated as a state and national Scenic River. The village straddles the line between Greene and Clark counties, perching serenely at the head of this spectacular gorge. The 1800s Clifton Opera House is now the meeting site of the village council and the local historical society, as well as a venue for musical concerts.

The quaint, small village of Spring Valley and surrounding Spring Valley Township offer a rural residential haven that excels in picturesque landscapes and historic charm. The 1888 Town Hall building is still in use and houses the post office, the village council meeting room, and the town records. Another famous building is the George Barrett Concrete House, circa 1854, distinguished as the first poured concrete building in Ohio. Many of the area’s historic sites are available along the scenic bike trail that meanders through Spring Valley and links to the Little Miami River Scenic Trail. The agricultural heritage of Spring Valley is celebrated each year with the Spring Valley Potato Festival, transforming Main Street into an extravaganza of great food, wonderful crafts, a farmer’s market, a baked goods auction, a pet parade, free continuous live entertainment, and family activities. The Spring Valley Wildlife Area offers a peaceful retreat where birds and other animals including snapping turtles and beavers can be viewed in pristine wetlands.

The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base plays a significant role in the economy, vibrancy, growth, and development of Greene County. Stretching between Greene and Montgomery counties, the base is only eight miles northeast of the central business district of Dayton. Part of the base fringes the communities of Riverside, Fairborn, and Beavercreek, positively impacting the real estate markets and creating a close relationship between military personnel and local residents. The base was named in part after the Wright brothers, who used the Huffman Prairie as a testing ground. Wright-Patterson AFB is the headquarters of the Air Force Materiel Command, one of the important commands of the US Air Force. The base also features the Wright-Patterson Medical Center, the Air Force Institute of Technology, the headquarters of the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the National Museum of the United States Air Force. The presence of this important installation has given the region the status of having one of the nation’s highest concentrations of scientists and researchers.
