Beautiful Camden County in the Inner Banks region of North Carolina is adjacent to Hampton Roads, Virginia as well as the beaches of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Forming a consolidated city-county government with the county seat of Camden, this joint jurisdiction was the first of its kind in the state in spite of the fact that Camden is an unincorporated community. A small section of Elizabeth City is also located in Camden County, greatly expanding the amenities and resources available to local residents.

Services
Albemarle Hospital in nearby Elizabeth City—part of Albemarle Health, northeastern North Carolina’s largest regional health and wellness provider—anchors a comprehensive range of care. Specializations include advanced surgical procedures, an expansive rehabilitation program, the region’s most sophisticated diagnostic center, same-day ambulatory surgery, urgent and emergency care, and a regional oncology center. The hospital maintains a wide variety of community education programs and support groups that underline a commitment to preventative wellness. Programs like the Community Care Clinics are available to serve underinsured or uninsured residents.

Camden County Schools is one of the smallest in North Carolina but nevertheless maintains a progressive attitude toward education. The opening of the new CamTech High School during the 2006-07 academic year provides a project-based learning school in a technology-rich environment. The next year, the system opened the all-new Camden Intermediate School in response to rapid growth. Aggressive achievement goals have been recognized by such awards as “Top Ten School District for Highest Graduation Rate” and other accolades. The level of community support for the schools breathes life into the motto: Camden Keeps Kids First in Education. Opportunities for higher education are as close to home as Elizabeth City State University, which has provided a center of academic excellence in northeastern North Carolina for more than a century. Four-year programs in the arts and sciences combine with select professional and pre-professional areas of study. The Graduate Center collaborates with other constituent institutions to offer master’s level programs. An impressive number of private colleges are available within commuting distance, although Elizabeth City is also home to the public two-year College of the Albemarle. Several public and private colleges are available with a reasonable commute from Camden County.
