Services
Unique to Virginia, the school division serves both the City of Williamsburg and James City County. The close proximity of Williamsburg enhances the educational and healthcare amenities that are available close to home. The College of William and Mary is one of the nation’s premier state-assisted liberal arts university, enjoying a reputation that rivals that of a prestigious private college. Those who are seeking an affordable two-year beginning to a four-year degree can attend Thomas Nelson Community College. This comprehensive institution serves a number of Hampton Roads cities as well as  Williamsburg, James City County, and York County on the peninsula.

The highly acclaimed Sentara healthcare system manages three major healthcare centers on the peninsula. Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton offers a technologically advanced acute-care facility that features the latest technology in the industry that includes one of the area’s first “smart” operating rooms and a campus-wide fiber-optic backbone to support transfer of filmless, digital diagnostic images. Port Warwick Medical Arts in Oyster Point provides highly skilled physicians and a facility equipped for superior patient service in one convenient location.

Williamsburg is also home to the Sentara Williamsburg Community Hospital, ensuring state-of-the-art healthcare facilities and services close to home for residents of James City County. The hospital specializes in medicine, surgery, and obstetrics. It also features complete diagnostic and imaging services, cardiac care, a cancer treatment center, pediatrics, and orthopedics. Other services include home health, emergency services, and community health education.

Everything you could possibly desire is either right outside the front door or minutes from home. James City County
Those who are longing for the relaxed pace and serenity of country life will find no finer atmosphere than panoramic James City County. Graced by natural beauty and miles of unspoiled countryside, James County is heavily wooded with native pines, accented by spring azaleas and rhododendrons or summer wildflowers along tranquil roadsides. Peace, harmony, and rural treasures are the hallmarks of this scenic region. As one of the two counties that neighbor Williamsburg, James City County is situated in the heart of the nation’s premier showcase of colonial history.

Even more appealing to many new residents is the county’s prime location just minutes from the expanded urban resources in the peninsula’s major cities of Hampton and Newport News. This centralized location combined with advanced transportation links across Hampton Roads has elevated James City County to the status of a high desirable bedroom community.

However, residential development is not the only boom activity occurring in the county. Tourism plays a major role in the local economy. As part of the Historic Triangle that includes Williamsburg and York County, James City County continually welcomes visitors from around the world as they learn about the founding of our nation. The opening of the Anheuser-Busch brewery in the 1970s opened a new page of James City County history, attracting ancillary industries like Reynolds Metals and Ball Metal Container Group, manufacturers of cans and bottles for the brewery.

Anheuser-Busch capital investments throughout the Historic Triangle have encouraged growth in every sector of the economy, from luxurious residential communities to upscale business development and convention facilities with nearby restaurants and recreation centers. As you might expect, both the retail and construction industries were able to ride the high wave in the wake of the county’s tremendous growth and expansion.

With its healthy, rural setting and progressive attitude, James City County affords an outstanding quality of life. Area youth receive an excellent education in area schools, benefiting from a dedicated staff, modern classrooms, and a focus on individual attention. Major healthcare institutions offering state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment are available in cities as close as Williamsburg or minutes away in Hampton and Newport News.

Steeped in historic lore and significance, James City County has emerged from the original Jamestown Settlement with a strong commitment to its rural legacy. Approximately 40 percent of the county is either preserved as undeveloped open space and woodlands or devoted to agriculture, with many original family farms concentrated in the northern quadrant.
