Services
As the smallest but one of the most respected public school systems in Hampton Roads, the rapidly growing Poquoson Public School District provides an excellent pupil/teacher ratio in modern, well-equipped schools. Higher education is available close to home in a variety of community colleges, trade, technical, and vocational schools as well as in major colleges and universities. Although the commute to South Hampton Roads is an easy one, a number of excellent institutions are available right on the Peninsula. The selection includes the highly respected public and private institutions of College of William and Mary, Christopher Newport University, and Hampton University.

Healthcare needs on the peninsula are served by a network of regional and community hospitals, family practice clinics, specialty institutions, and a complete range of medical professionals in every imaginable specialty. The Riverside Regional Medical Center in nearby Newport News and the Sentara Hampton General Hospital in Hampton provide state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment, along with a vast array of outpatient services.

Lifestyle
With its legacy of water and marshes, Poquoson is a postcard image of charming waterfront homes, inviting restaurants, and one-of-a-kind shops. Many residents of the Hampton Roads cities have discovered in Poquoson a small-town refuge and a slower pace of life. Newcomers can choose from vintage farm houses with abundant acreage or a custom-designed masterpiece located on the waterfront that commands spectacular views. Beautiful older homes, newer construction, and modern condominiums are available in a variety of architectural styles and price ranges.

Plum Tree Island National Wildlife Refuge is part of a unique salt marsh along the Chesapeake Bay, a pristine area for nature students and photographers. Tennis courts, playgrounds, ballfields, green spaces, and three public golf courses are just a few of the many amenities available close to home. The York River is ideal for taking canoe trips or launching a sailboat from one of the ramps. Water sports are among the most popular pastimes in Poquoson, but many alternatives remain for those who prefer to keep their feet planted on dry land. One of the most common destinations for outdoor adventure close to home is the York River State Park, where hiking trails mix with fishing spots and picnic areas for a day’s relaxation. Regardless of your favorite activity or sport, the Poquoson area can provide a quality facility.

Visitors and residents alike enjoy the Colonial Parkway as viewed from a car window or behind bicycle handlebars. This 23-mile roadway runs through the Colonial National Historical Park, beginning at Jamestown Island and ending at the Yorktown Visitor’s Center. The surroundings of large dogwoods, oaks, and redbud trees scattered throughout the unspoiled countryside seem to make all sense of time and pressure simply melt away. While Poquoson boasts a charm, beauty, and magnetism uniquely its own, the city is just minutes from some of Hampton Roads’ premier cultural, historical, and entertainment attractions.

Nearby Williamsburg provides a full calendar of musical and cultural performances. The Yorktown Arts Foundation operates the On The Hill Cultural Arts Center in Yorktown, exhibiting works by local artisans as well as workshops for hands-on experience. The Waterman Museum is a regional attraction located along the York River, displaying artifacts and information on generations of fishermen, oystermen, and others who labored and lived along the river and bay. For those who desire cool evening breezes, front porch swings, lazy Sunday afternoon picnics, and plenty of open space, few locations in the nation can equal Poquoson for environmental richness and unspoiled beauty.

Poquoson
The City of Poquoson is ideally situated adjacent to major employers like the Langley Air Force Base and NASA, but it also offers easy access to all major Hampton Roads cities. With its lifestyle advantages and ideal location, the city has become one of the most desirable residential localities in the Tidewater region. Many of the newer residents of the city specifically selected Poquoson as their home because of the reputation for excellence enjoyed by its school system. Poquoson combines the benefits of small-town friendliness and hometown pride with the cultural, professional, and educational advantages of a major metropolitan area.

Known by natives as Bull Island, Poquoson is a city of proud residents who consider themselves to be both independent and civic-minded. In spite of the area’s growing popularity and burgeoning development, the city has tenaciously preserved its quaint, seafood-village ambiance. In fact, planners actually postponed the addition of modern paved roads and traffic signals until recent years.

Along today’s efficient interstate and highway network, local fishermen are sharing the road with scientists, physicians, business managers, and people from all walks of life. Many of these daily travelers are employed outside the city but retreat to the tranquility of Poquoson at the end of the working day. Even those who live and work in Poquoson enjoy the close proximity to major metropolitan amenities in cities like Hampton and Newport News, as well as the historic sites and theme parks that are featured in nearby Williamsburg.

Carved out of York County in 1952, Poquoson became an official city in 1975, a relatively recent event in the scheme of Virginia history. Poquoson is almost completely surrounded by water, creating more than 80 miles of shoreline and encompassing nearly 4,400 acres of salt-marsh wetlands. Little wonder that the area has long been a haven for the Hampton Roads commercial seafood industry, which also forms the foundation of the local economy.
