Pasquotank County and Elizabeth City serve as the economic and commercial hub for the northeastern North Carolina mainland. The building of the Dismal Swamp Canal in the 1800s linked the sounds and rivers of this region with the port of Norfolk and serves today as a transportation channel for thousands of boaters in the Intracoastal Waterway.

Although Elizabeth City is the picturesque leading city and Pasquotank County seat of government, this famous waterfront town actually stretches across the county line into Camden County. Once a major seaport, the city now offers 48-hour complimentary dockage to travelers from around the globe and is a popular stop along the Intracoastal Waterway. In keeping with the city’s official title of Harbor of Hospitality, the “Rose Buddies” have long been the city’s famous waterfront ambassadors, greeting boaters with a rose, wine, and cheese at Mariner’s Warf. The town’s waterfront has undergone an exciting revitalization that includes new docking facilities, interesting shops, and the outstanding Museum of the Albemarle. This unique venue interprets more than 400 years of local history, the same rich heritage that is evident through out Elizabeth City’s historic districts. A lively historic downtown and waterfront, unique shopping and dining experiences, cultural and entertainment attractions, a public university and private colleges, excellent schools, and a major healthcare facility are some of the facets that make Elizabeth City so appealing to new residents.
