Located along the Historic Albemarle Highway (US Highway 17), Perquimans County is less than one hour from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The leading town and county seat of Hertford claims a rich history and preserved sites that include the oldest existing brick house in North Carolina and the state’s first land deed of record. This historic Inner Banks community draws newcomers and visitors to a picturesque waterfront environment and the relaxed pace of a simpler time. Historic treasures abound, including the Periauger, a colonial-era log boat that has not been built for more than 150 years. The famous 1730 Newbold-White House, a regional historic attraction, also serves as the outdoor setting for the Summer Breeze Concert series. Miles of pristine waterways and a rich history that spans four centuries lends a completely unique and charming flavor to the county seat. Quaint shops and inns, wonderful restaurants, and a charming downtown district that encourages leisurely strolling are just a few of the attractions. The Perquimans Arts League Gallery is also located in Hertford, featuring changing exhibits. Missing Mill State Park provides a scenic setting for picnics or passive recreation. The small but quaint town of Winfall is located in the central portion of Perquimans County bordering the river of the same name. Serving primarily as a residential haven and a welcoming hometown, the community is proudly growing with commercial development. In fact, the town describes itself as “rising to greatness” and has initiated many positive changes in recent years. The prior decade had actually seen a decline in population and businesses, but collaborative energy is infusing new life and revitalization.
